Look at how well our lettuces are growing after a weekend of heavy rain, followed by a beautiful 24 degrees day.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful
Today we went for a walk around Clyde and helped to tidy up the streets. We picked up some rubbish, but generally the streets were pretty clean. Well done everyone - you are such tidy kiwis.

Bokashi Bins
Today Fred Peyton visited school to teach some of the Enviroschool members how to use the bokashi composting system.
Next term each class will begin using bokashi bins, and our fantastic Enviroschool leaders will take responsibility for overseeing the use of the bins.

Zero Waste Competition
A huge congratulations to all our prize winners in the Zero Waste Challenge.
Arlia Murphy and Emily Wellstead created a really catchy song
entitled ‘Go Green’ and Madison Biggs, Emma Rees and Phoebe
Wellstead, created a short video explaining the importance of
recycling. Both groups shared the runner-up position in the Year
4-6 prize category.
Room 5 and 6 were also prize winners in the Year 1- 3 Category with entries that shared their recycled artwork.
Today there was a special prize giving at the Council Chambers. The prize giving was during a formal Council meeting and the children shared their entries with the Mayor and the Councillors before receiving their prizes. Andrew and Emer represented our class and collected the Room 6 prize, which was a kiwi puppet, four picture books and lots of zero waste stickers. We were very lucky!
We are very proud of all of you - well done!

Wrapper free school
As you will know
doubt be aware, Central Otago District Council will be changing to fortnightly
rubbish collection from 1 July 2014. Our
school has been part of a ‘Gearing Up for Change’ initiative lead by Central Otago
Enviroschools. As part of this
initiative all classes have been looking at ways that we can reduce, reuse and
recycle in order to minimise our school waste.
Food wrappers,
yoghurt containers, and lunch scraps account for a large
percentage of our school waste, and litter is still an issue in the playground.
Starting this term we have become a ‘Wrapper Free School’,
in order to reduce some of our school waste and address the litter
problem.
We are asking
that you remove all wrappers from muesli bars etc, before it goes into your
child’s lunchbox. Please use either reusable bags or containers for sandwiches,
chips, popcorn and snack foods.
Did you know?
- More than 2.5 million tonnes of waste is being buried in our landfills each year.
- 3/4 of this could have been saved. This equates to 8kg of landfill per person each week that could have been reused, recycled, or composted.
- The useful lifespan of a plastic bag is only 10 minutes, yet it takes 1000 years to break down!

Envirogroup Feast
Today the Envirogroup prepared a feast from the school garden. They prepared coleslaw from the fresh produce they picked from the garden yesterday. They made tasty coleslaw sandwiches for the whole school. It was delicious! Click on the picture below to visit the Enviroschool Blog and see what they have been up to.
