We have been learning about symmetry and have used what we have learnt this week to design wrapping paper. We learnt how to translate (slide) and reflect (flip) groups of shapes. Many of our designs have elements of symmetry within them. Can you spot any designs which are symmetrical?
In Maths this week we are looking at patterns in the world around us. Today we went on a hunt for symmetrical objects. We looked for objects that had lines of symmetry. We discovered that we can use a vertical line (up and down) or a horizontal line (left to right) to divide objects into two matching pieces. We also discovered that some shapes have many lines of symmetry.
This week is NZ Maths week. I have signed our class up to the NZ Maths week website and we will be participating in challenges during the week. Keep an eye on our blog to see what we have been up to.

Our teddies have been at school this week and we have been measuring them. We have been using teddy bear strips to measure their arms and legs, their arm span, and their height.
We also arranged our teddies from the shortest to the tallest.
Charotte and Jasmine brought their big teddy to school to meet us.
We needed a lot of teddy strips to measure this huge teddy bear. It was taller than most of us and almost as tall as Mrs Kitto
Our focus for Numeracy over the past few weeks has been learning about numbers and understanding how numbers are made up. We have been using place value houses to help us understand larger numbers. Click on the photos below to play some on-line games that help to reinforce what we have been learning in class.
Today Room 7 taught us some cool new Maths games. The Room 7 children were wonderful teachers and we are looking forward to playing these games during our Maths rotation next week. Thanks Room 7!
We are learning about measurement. We are learning how to use non-standard measurements to compare objects. Yesterday we compared our teddy bears. We used connecting blocks to measure and compare the height of our teddy bears, the length of their arms and legs, and their arm spans. Today we drew around each other and used our hands and feet to measure the parts of our bodies. We discovered that using our hands and feet to measure isn't as accurate as using blocks, because we all have different sized hands and feet.
During Maths this week we have been looking at position words. We have been following and giving instructions that use words like up, down, over, under, through, between, beside and many more. We hid objects around the classroom and tried to give our buddy instructions that helped them to move around the classroom and find the objects. We learnt that you need to give really clear instructions so that your buddy is able to find the object that you have hidden. We also had lots of fun on the adventure playground creating obstacle courses for our buddies to try. We had to listen carefully to all of the instructions and try to remember where to go.
