Science with Henrica

Today Henrica came to school to teach us about 'chemical reactions'.  We did an experiment and watch a chemical reaction.

We put baking soda, hot water and white vinegar into a zip locked bag and gave it a shake. When the three ingredients mixed together they created a chemical reaction and caused the bag to blow up and explode. It was very exciting!

The Magic Glove Experiment

Today we did an experiment. We put warm water, vinegar and baking soda into a jar and watched what happened to the liquid and to the glove.

We learnt that the baking soda and the vinegar react with each other and create a gas called carbon dioxide.  The carbon dioxide gas fills up the glove.

Creating our own experiments

We were fascinated by what we saw with your gummy bear experiment.  We decided to conduct our own experiments either changing the type of lolly that went into the liquid, changing the temperature of the water, or changing the type of liquid we put the gummy bears into.  We have planned our experiments and made our predictions about what we think might happen.  You can listen to our predictions above.  We'll let you know what happens on Friday,

Gummy Bear Observations

On Wednesday we began a science experiment and made predictions about what might happen when you leave gummy bears in four different liquids. You can listen to our predictions on Wednesday's post.
Today we looked really closely at our gummy bears and tried to describe the changes that had occurred.   Watch our video to hear what we learnt.

Gummy Bear Science

Today we began a science experiment and made predictions about what might happen when you leave gummy bears in four different liquids. We have recorded our predictions (our ideas) and will observe the gummy bears over the next two days.
Listen to our predictions by clicking on the clip below.

What do you think will happen?

Science

Today we did a science experiment.  We had to make a prediction (have a guess) about how many drops of water we might be able to put onto a coin. Next we took a 10 cent coin, a dropper and some water and carefully dropped water onto our coin.  We tried this several times to see who could get the most drops onto their coin. We noticed some really interesting things. Listen to our 'Voicethread' to hear our predictions, what we did, and lastly some of our observations.

Bubbles

Our Quadblogging friends from E7 Eastern Hutt School posted a bubble poem last week and some photos of them blowing bubbles. We thought it looked like lots of fun and Mrs Kitto promised that we could have some bubble fun this week.
Today we made our own bubble wands out of pipe cleaners.  We shaped our wands into different shapes - stars, hearts, triangles, and circles.  We found out that it doesn't matter what shape your wand is, the bubbles were always round.
