M & M experiment

Last week we did an experiment using skittles.  We were curious to see if the results would be the same if replaced the skittles with M & M 's.   Watch the video below to find out.

Freezing Temperatures

Yesterday we talked about how water can change into ice. We decided to create our own experiment. We filled five containers. One container had sand in it and another had a mix of sand and water.  We put dirt in a third container and a mixture of dirt and water in a fourth container. The final container was filled with only water. We put them outside over night to see what would happen.

Wow Factor Science



Today we did a science experiment that investigated surface tension.  We pretended to be scientists and carefully observed what happened.

Jazmin said "The colours are mixing".
Blake said "It looks like a smoothie".
Elina noticed that "the top of the surface moved".
Levi and Aden noticed that "the colours were twirling around in a circle"
Jackson thought that the patterns "looked like birds wings".
Dylan said "the bubbles moved around the plate like jet boats".
Tom explained that "the colours rushed to the sides and then it looked like a double wave".

Science - Drops on a coin

Today we did a science experiment.  We had to make a prediction (have a guess) about how many drops of water we might be able to put onto a coin. Next we took a 10 cent coin, a dropper and some water and carefully dropped water onto our coin.  We tried this several times to see who could get the most drops onto their coin. We noticed some really interesting things.

Science with Mrs Lloyd

Today Mrs Lloyd came into our class to share a science experiment with us. We learnt about the three stages of matter - solid, liquid and gas.
Water can take the form of a solid, liquid or gas? 

The Experiment
Mrs Llyod  filled a glass with dried peas and carefully poured water into the glass. Next we made predictions about what we thought might happen. 

Lucas thought that the peas might overflow.

Jimmy said that the peas would grow back to the same size they had been before they were dried.

Lexie thought that the peas would drink the water and they would go round again.

Zaar said that they would unfreeze and turn back into little, tiny peas.

We had to be patient scientists and watch carefully to see what would happen. 

Some of our predictions were correct.  
The water moved from the space inside the glass and into the peas. 
This process is called 'osmosis'.

Scientists at work

We have been young scientists in the Kea room. 
We have been blowing and observing bubbles. 

  • Marcus noticed that the bubbles popped very fast.
  • Meg found that her wand had too much mixture the first time she tried to blow a bubble, but when she put less mixture on it worked perfectly.
  • Harry found out that if you don’t have enough mixture on your wand it will pop before you can blow it.
  • Siena adapted the equipment. She made her wand shorter so that it was easier to blow bubbles.
  • Jimmy discovered that if you poke a soapy finger through a bubble, it doesn’t pop. 
“Wonderings”
  • Aden wondered how he could make big bubbles.  Lucas thought you would need a wand with a bigger circle .
  • Luca wondered if you could blow a bubble without holding a wand.
  • Lots of us wondered what would happen if we changed the shape of the wand.   Meg and Lexie tested triangle shaped wands, Jimmy made a star shaped wand, and Harry made a rectangle.
  • Marcus decided to make a diamond shaped wand. He thought the bubbles might come out as fat or thin diamonds.
  • Oliver made a wand that was a circle with a hole in it. He hoped that he would be able to blow a bubble with a hole in the middle.
  • Lochy made a tricky wheel shaped wand.


We discovered that it didn’t matter what shape your wand was, the bubble always ends up round.
